THE SITACS STUDENT GUIDE TO SOMEOF THE UNIVERSITY'S REGULATIONS,
CODES OF CONDUCT AND SCHOOL POLICIES
The information provided here should be read in conjunction with the
regulations and codes of practice in the University of Wollongong Handbook
found at http://www.uow.edu.au/handbook/
1. General Student Responsibilities (should be read in conjunction
with http://www.uow.edu.au/handbook/codesofprac/cop_students.html )
It is the responsibility of the student to:
Attend all lectures, tutorials and practical classes
for subjects for which you are enrolled;
Submit assessable tasks by the due date;
Keep a copy of all assessments submitted (in both hard
and soft copy);
Retain the receipt issued on submission of assignment;
Retain all marked assignments in order to ensure rapid
resolution of any queries relating to assessment;
Read all relevant information contained in the subject
outlines issued to you;
Make yourself familiar with all information about the
course and subjects which you are enrolled. This information maybe
found as:
notices on WebCT
notices on school noticeboards;
notices on the lecturers' doors;
University Handbook and subject outlines;
SOLS mail
Ensure a correct record of your current address and
telephone number is listed on SOLS.
2. Submission of Assignments
1. Submission of Hard Copy Assignments
It is the responsibility of the student to:
submit all assignments by the due date (usually in
the tutorial) to the designated staff as specified in the subject
outline;
submit all assignments with a School cover sheet,
and ensure you keep the receipt (which should be torn off the bottom
of the sheet);
ensure that all work is word processed and then printed
so the text is legible;
seek an extension via SOLS (if they have a good reason)
prior to the due date for the submission of the assignment;
not submit the assignment via the School's facsimile
nor by e-mail, unless specified as part of a requirement for the
assignment;
Only under exceptional circumstances, will
the Faculty Enquiry Office or the School's Administrative staff
accept assignments;
ensure that all work is collected from whom it was
submitted.
2. Submission of Soft Copy Assignments (Not available for IACT subjects)
It is the responsibility of the student to:
submit all assignments by the due date via the UNIX/Macintosh
program specified by the lecturer in the assignment description;
ensure that each file submitted contains an acknowledgement
of the student as author of the code in that file;
indicate in the acknowledgement any source of material
other than their own independent work;
seek an extension via SOLS (if they have a good reason)
prior to the due date for the submission of the assignment.
3. Late Submission of Work
Extensions of time to submit material for assessment can only be granted
in exceptional circumstances such as illness or misadventure. Written
notice is given at the beginning of lectures for each subject of the
requirements for the subject and this information includes the dates
for the submission of work for assessment. "Pressure of work",
either from employment or from other subjects, is not an acceptable
reason for seeking an extension of time. All instances where illness
will prevent you from meeting the due dates for assessment will need
to be substantiated with a medical certificate from a doctor. If an
extension is not granted then penalties apply to late submission of
work, though each case is looked at individually. Penalties vary from
subject to subject. Consult your subject outline for further information.
However, if it is not stated in the outlines, the penalty is one mark
per weekday the assignment is late.
4. Plagiarism
Plagiarism is the use of another person's work or idea as if it is
your own.
The other person may be an author, critic, lecturer or another student.
When it is desirable or necessary to use other people's material, take
care to include appropriate references and attribution - do not pretend
the ideas are your own. Be sure not to plagiarize unintentionally.
The University's policy concerning plagiarism is set out in Acknowledgement
Practice / Plagiarism.
Academic
Unit Procedures for Investigating Plagiarism and Other Forms of Cheating are
set out under Section 3 of the Code of Practice - Teaching & Assessment.
Plagiarism has led to expulsion from the University.
5. Special Consideration
(should be read in conjunction with Special
Consideration Policy http://www.uow.edu.au/handbook/courserules/specialconsideration.html
Special consideration is a process to help students minimise
the impact of certain adverse and unforeseen circumstances
on their progression in a degree and their performance in subjects.
To apply for Special Consideration, students
must log onto SOLS using
their student number and barcode, and select the Special
Consideration link. A personalised application form will
be then appear for electronic completion and submission. Students
applying for special consideration must produce supporting
documentation, with Student Administration. This documentation
may be reviewed by the subject co-ordinator.
For all forms of assessment students are normally required
to seek special consideration before the
date scheduled for submission or performance of the assessment
item, but no more than five working days after the date when
the item was due.
Supplementary Exams
While the School normally grants supplementary exams when
the student does not sit the standard exam for an acceptable
reason, each student is treated as an individual case and there
is no guarantee a supplementary exam will be granted. If a
supplementary exam is granted the date will be determined by
the University, via ARD . You will be notified in via
SOLS mail the time and date of this supplementary exam.
You must follow the instructions given in the email message.
Please note that if this is your last session and
you are granted a supplementary exam, be aware that your
results will not be processed in time to meet the graduation
deadline.

work required from students. Normally, attendance and meaningful participation
in 80% of classes is a pre-requisite to satisfactory completion of
an IACT subject. Failure to comply may result in a fail grade being
recorded for the subject. Normally, all assessments should be completed.
